More about charter schools

I found this great article on http://voiceofsandiego.org

Fed up with crowded classes, Rose Banks plucked her gifted granddaughter from her El Centro elementary school midway through the first grade, and started cobbling together a homeschool program. For Banks, who had never taught before, it was a bewildering task.

"Where do I go? What does the state require? I didn't want to teach her at my whim," Banks recalled. "I wanted her to graduate, to get credit for her classes and go on to college."

Banks found guidance through a free, unconventional school that helps homeschoolers shape their education. Today, her 17-year-old granddaughter Stacy Banks is nearing graduation from Greater San Diego Academy, one of a growing crop of charter schools that caters to homeschoolers. It equips parents to be better teachers, wading through lessons in grammar and calculus; it helps students tackle lessons, and fortify their college applications.

WHY HOMESCHOOL?

Homeschooling, or independent study, is an important option for children who miss a lot of school because they are not well. Not all children are able to attend every day of school, with minimal absences. With homeschooling, or independent study, education is tailored to individual students' needs.

Not everyone needs this and there often is a lack of understanding on the part of those who don't need it - as if students who miss a lot of  school simply lack discipline that they should have.

As a parent of a young learner who has chronically missed a lot of school, it is a relief that he is able to rest when he needs extra rest and not fall behind in his schooling.

California Based Homeschool Groups Stand Together to Defend Rights After Recent California Appellate Court Decision

Sacramento, California, March 26, 2008- A far reaching court ruling that could effect as many as 200,000 homeschooled children in California has families concerned that continuing to educate their children at home is now illegal. State and local support groups have been busy answering calls from the media and reassuring parents.  The ruling filed on February 28th by the 2nd District Court of Appeal essentially said that the only types of schooling that were legal in California were full-time attendance in a brick & mortar institution or being taught full time by a  credentialed tutor.

The Charter School of San Diego. This excellent program allows teachers to work with students in small classes and individually; and the students work independentlyfrom home or a library. This school is part of San Diego Unified, has sites all over town, and is ideal for students who want a traditional education but are not succeeding in traditional school.
